Civil Immigration Warrant / Administrative Warrant: A document created by ICE authorizing officers to arrest an individual for a civil immigration violation. This document does not go through the court process and is not signed by a judge.

Judicial Immigration Warrant: A criminal warrant signed by a judge authorizing a law enforcement agency to apprehend an individual for criminal immigration violations.

Immigration Detainer: A request from ICE asking that a law enforcement agency (federal, state, or local) notify ICE of an undocumented individual's release date and time in order for ICE to arrest them.

Lunn v. Commonwealth: A landmark case passed in 2017 that banned state and local officials from detaining a person or holding a person in detention beyond their expected release based on a civil immigration detainer. More information about this case can be found at the Boston Bar Association.

8 U.S.C. § 1373: A federal law passed by the Trump administration that attempts to limit sanctuary policies. For more information about this law please refer to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center’s pamphlet.

287(g) Agreement: An agreement signed by local law enforcement agencies that deputizes officers to enforce civil immigration functions. (More information about what 287 (g) agreements entail can be found here).
