#LoveJustice: A Statewide Call-in Day

Step 1: Find Your State Representative

Go to https://malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator and find your State Representative.

Step 2: Call your Representative and ask to speak to a legislative aid

Sample script:

Hi, my name is __________. I am a constituent of Representative ________ and I live in (city).

I am calling to ask the Representative to contact the criminal justice conference committee and ask them to:

  • Adopt the Senate’s proposal creating a parent-child privilege to ensure children can talk freely to their parents ( in section 202 in the Senate bill).  Children cannot be forced to testify against their parents, but parents can testify against their children.  This undermines the parent-child relationship, and parents’ critical role at all stages of the juvenile justice process.

  • And to adopt the Senate’s proposal to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction to exclude kids under age 12 and to include 18 year olds. Taxpayers spend the most money on young adults in the criminal justice system and get the worst outcomes.

Do you think the Representative would support these bills?

Thank you for taking the time to talk with me about these bills.

Step 3: Follow up

You can download fact sheets for the Parent-Child Privilege and Raise the Age campaigns to share with your legislator.

Please contact CfJJ if you need help answering any questions legislative staff may have.
